His trip to Wales drew the attention of many, with some getting excited at the prospect of a Malaysian plying his trade in that country.
For national team captain Safiq Rahim, his stint with Championship side Cardiff City was just another way to enhance himself as a footballer.
“I want to move abroad but I have to be realistic as well. The leagues nearer to us look like a better bet than England,” said Safiq.
The 24-year-old has received offers from several Indonesian clubs but opted to remain with Selangor for another year.
Moving to Indonesia was part of the initial plan but according to Safiq, the move took a step back due to the uncertainty of the Indonesian league.
“The prospect of the J-League actually excites me. It’s one of the better league in Asia.”
Many choose to ignore the fact that obtaining a work permit in England would be difficult — if not near impossible — due to the ranking of Malaysian football.
“It wasn’t a trial. Of course I would be more than happy if they wanted me to be their player but I went there without intending to stay,” said Safiq.
“Everything is very disciplined there and they follow a strict schedule.”
The Selangor player also compared facilities in Cardiff to the ones available here. According to him, despite Cardiff being a second tier club, their facilities by far overshadow those in Malaysia.
